Airbagged Trailer: Good Idea or Bad?

Whether you think this is a good idea or a bad one, it's certainly innovative. Not only does this make loading and unloading incredibly easy, but it creates a smoother ride than leaf springs. And you get the small added bonus of an onboard compressor to fill your tires with. Of course, it's $12,000, which isn't chump change for a trailer. Personally, I think it's awesome.

But the real question is, how does it react when attached to a truck and being lowered...

how much is a trailer usually? and what sedan is towing 4000lbs?

looks fun. now I'm just waiting for a bagged car on a bagged trailer towed by a bagged dually.

It's not a bad idea, but I don't see any benefit over a conventional trailer beyond ride quality, and I don't see an application for a slightly improved ride quality in a trailer.

That being said, bagged truck owners will love this.

A well built car-hauler is usually around $3-5K.

I was looking for it and couldn't find one. Closest thing I came up with was a Facebook page .

That is really, really cool. I've always wondered about a trailer design that would vastly improve ride quality and this is a great example. Thanks for the post..

It's great for hauling stanced/low cars/racecars... also, I would love to use one of these when moving furniture around.

IIRC this is from Australia. They actually still tow things with vehicles that are not the size of the moon. Also, things seem to cost about 1.5 - 2 times as much there as the similar product would here in the US. I bet this trailer would not cost 12K USD. Price out a Chevy SS and an equivalent Holden SS and see the difference.

If we just do a straight currency conversion (USDAUD = 1.4), then the trailer would come in around $10,500.

However, their Facebook page leads me to believe that this version at least is in the US. It says:

US$12k+tax+delivery (from SoCal).

Decent...

but if you can raise/lower each wheel independently, that makes for one more, potentially BIG advantage.

If you can raise the ride height to the top on three of the wheels, and deflate the fourth, and possibly prop it up with something, you can possibly change a flat trailer tire while the trailer is still loaded, which could be a good thing on the side of the road.

unless the tongue is similarly vertically articulated, the trailer would "ramp" while still attached to the hitch ball.

It doesn't appear that the tongue is vertically articulated... although perhaps it has a heavy-duty tongue jack that can act as a ramp support to alleviate the loading forces on the tow vehicle.

So if the tow vehicle can't handle that kind of tongue load until the trailer suspension is raised back up, one would want to load the trailer and raise it while un-hitched, even if the tow vehicle remains in place to be re-hitched.

I wonder if they make a 2-wheel smaller version with optional motorcycle wheel chocks.

If it is half the price, it might make for a good toy hauler, and utility trailer for lighter duty towing than hauling a car.

I think it's a decent idea for car transport but of limited utility otherwise. Might be something you could rent out though decently, because people might want them to move their house stuff from time to time.
